A MEMORY FOR THE WEB SITE

I wonder how many of those who remember the ‘mantra’ of Canon Wright, Vicar of St Edwards? He constantly quoted from what I now know was a saying of St Augustine of Hippo.

That the sacrament of holy communion (or the mass) was “ An outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace.”   Ring any bells?

Barry Joyce

I've just been looking through the year list and recalling lots of the names there.  Looking at reunion pictures I was shocked to see myself and lots of the old classmates  - some of whom came up from St, Ed's juniors as well. To keep this short, does anyone know the where abouts of these few:

Jenny Davies - I used to do athletic meetings with her. She was quite a running star!

Hazel Golledge - she was at St.Ed's junior school with me

Rowena Keeble - 4 of us went to Cornwall when we finished school. Down to St.Agnes and Rowena's parents kindly provided a car so we could drive there.

Julia Gillman. She also came to Portsmouth where I completed my civil engineering.

Karen Geard - always had a lovely smile. I think she was at St, Ed's juniors as well.

Gillian Ross - Now she gave me some opinions and advice at the time and I'd love to tell her - Gillian you were so right !

Barb(I recall)ara Brown. Met up after the reunion and lost contact. I know she lived in Rush Green

Heather Tilley - lovely young lady

Karen Boston - she was deputy head girl with me as deputy head boy. She was e real bubbly character and had such an infectious smile.

Christine Roberts - was in the infant school and St.Ed's juniors with me. Had her fabulous ginger red hair. Always had a great smile. Had a older sister Janet

Janice Taylor -again came up through the infants and juniors with me. Her mum used to make her 'Bovril' sandwiches which she shared! She also had the longest plaited ponytail. I believe she lives in Scotland. Janice had an older sister Mandy

If anyone has contacts for any of these please pass on my details below. I'd love to chat to anyone of them: and or any one else (who's not listed) that wants to get in contact

Came across this page quite by accident and was surprised to see my name listed joined 1948.  Reading the names  it brought back many happy memories of my time there. I left in 1950 age 14 and although only a short time I do remember many of the teacher's - my class (B) was a Scottish woman teacher - Mrs Mactavish.?

In exams I came top and was moved up to A in my last year and was most upset at the move.  The only part I didn't enjoy was playing hockey in the winter at a sports field near Gallows Corner. I was on Wing and had to keep running up and down to keep warm. Never got to touch the action.

I must be one of the oldest Edwardians at 88 and wish I had found this site earlier. My name back then was Jean Farmer.  Any idea where I can get anymore info of my class?? Would love to hear from anyone.

Hi, My name is Graham Pepper. I was at St Edwards from 1959 to 1963 when I moved away from Romford. Friends I remember, John Stillwell, John Harris, Richard Willis to name a few.

Hi Brian Green here I attended st eds between 1960-1966. After leaving i completed an apprenticeship as a chef and spent the next 50 odd years working in catering in one form or another. I married Penny in 1971 and have three boys. We moved to Perth Western Australia in 1983. I retired from catering a couple of years ago and now spend my time running a canine boarding kennels/dog training facility and beekeeping. I have some fond memories of my time at St Eds. Not sure St Eds would feel the same. Would love to be contacted by anyone who remembers me and maybe get together when I am in England hopefully later this year [2019] or early next.  Stay Happy .    psg16451@gmail.com

I was at St Ed’s from 62/66, used to knock around with Dennis Platt, Janet Carey, Janet  Dixon, Mary Furlong, along with a few others, would love to make contact with them again.

Hilary Carter – St Edwards C of E Infants & Primary School 1958 to 1964

Kevin Turner – St Edwards C of E Infants, Primary & Secondary School 1958 to 1969

We started school at St Edwards C of E Infants School in The Huts, Mercury Gardens in 1958. We met up recently and started discussing our early years and trying to recall the names of our classmates from our first year with Mrs Cakebread through to Mrs Vigars and Mrs Redgrave our teachers in the final years at the primary school.

Needless to say the memories came flooding back and recounted many names. We are now very keen to trace as many as old classmates as possible with a view to maybe having a reunion (date & venue to be decided) to celebrate our 65th birthdays!!

Hilary is living in Ponteland, Northumberland and Kevin is in Tavistock,  Devon.

Be great to hear from you in the hunt for our old classmates from any year.  Please email:  1958reunion@oldedwardians.com

Hilary & Kevin

My name is Jacqueline Cray

I have just found this site, I went to the school 1959,60,61.  I left in 1961 as we migrated to melbourne Australia.  I didn't like school much, but remember lining up in the playground to go into assembly.  "Taffy" teaching us Scottish dancing, Mrs sloane domestic science, "rawhide", Miss jones.  The quadrangle with the bell, the science room.  I also remember "Libby" that lived on the corner of the school in the lane.  Lots of memories when I really think about that time, anybody else from my years at the school?

Hi,

I was in the class of ’59. Joy Bacchi-Andreoli nee Webb.

We were in the market place before the move.

I was very saddened to hear of the death of Cannon Wright and HAT the headmaster both of whom I owe a lot to.

My email address is bacchiandreoli@btinternet.com.

I would love to hear from any of my year. It seems another life!

I would be very interested to hear what became of  5G??

Re: 1959 class photograph. I have managed to identify a number of my fellow pupils in the 1959 class photo.  However, there are lots of gaps - can anyone help fill these in?

Many thanks, Barrie McKay

If you look at the photograph and number from left to right, the top row is 1 to 11, second row is 12 to 22, third row (sitting) is 23 to 33, and fourth row (cross-legged) is 34 to 41.

So far I think I have identified the following:

1. William Castle, 2. Melvyn Ingle, 3. John Dodd, 4, Gerald Abraham, 5. Geoffrey Kirby, 6 Robert Strange(?), 7. Sidney Rickard, 8. Barrie McKay, 9. ? 10. Alan Line, 11. Kenneth Letten

12. Alister Smart, 13. ? 14. Pat Cecil, 15. ? 16. ? 17. ? 18. ? 19. ? 20. Pat Town, 21. ? 22. ?

23. ? 24. ? 25. ? 26. Jacqueline Heley(?), 27. Elizabeth Marchant, 28. Teacher? 29. Headmaster Mr Thomas 30. ? 31. ? 32. ? 33. ?

34. Robin Maillard, 35. Gerald Unwin, 36. ? 37. Alan Brown, 38. Clive Pennington, 39. ? 40. Peter Elton or Christopher Nevitt(?)

Hello Old Edwardians!

Found the website whilst searching for the whereabouts of St Edwards Primary School, knowing that the one in the Market Place has long gone.  When looking at the Primary School section I was absolutely astonished to see a photo of myself with my classmates in 4B 1953/54.  Our names were also listed but did not include Christian names and some of them were missing because of the quality of the print.  My friend during the primary years was Barbara Sutton who had a sister called Brenda.  I seem to remember the boys more than the girls!!  Alan Pardon was a lively character (but sadly I believe he is no longer with us), Peter Marchant was a friendly boy and all the girls admired Gordon Head (I think that was his Christian name) I am talking about 60 years ago!  I also enjoyed reading other people’s memories, one that included my sister Maggie Dawson who attended the Senior School.  I lived in Junction Road by the railway and although the house is no longer standing that area of Romford has not changed very much.  Not like the rest of Romford which is unrecognisable.  I know this from Google Earth.

I remember the headmaster was called Mr. Dutton and Mr. Booth was my teacher.  We had a very good knitting and needlework teacher and at the age of 10 I knitted a red cardigan.  I don’t think the children in the B form had the same opportunities as the A form and I remember being taken by my mother to the senior school to take the 11-plus which I found very daunting being in such a strange environment.  I always enjoyed going to St Edwards Church and I loved Sports Day where I was good at running and high-jump.  I used to love Christmas at school, where we had a big cardboard post box for our cards, we used to make many decorations and at the Christmas Party children used to bring cakes – it was the first time I had seen battenburg and I was mezmerised.

I too used to take a short cut to school through the garden nursery off Western Road and on the way home buy a penny bun.   The toilets were in outside wooden sheds and the large playing field at the back of the school was just dusty with no grass.   I moved to London in 1954 and at 13 attended a commercial class at the Secondary School and learnt shorthand and typing which stood me in good stead for future employment.  Worked in the City until I married in 1965, had three children and now have seven grandchildren.  I now really enjoy watching my grandchildren develop and wish I was five again starting out at school – I think I would do better second time around!   Oh, I do remember the little bottles of `warm’ milk that we had in the infants and really nice orange juice.  The school dinners were enjoyable except the tapioca pudding!

Anyway, just thought that as I was on the website I would touch base!

Regards to you all

Mary Hill(Dawson)

On browsing on my computer I found your site. I attended the infant and primary school from about 1952 to approximately 1956.  I  remember walking through the  local nursery and garden centre to the huts that housed the infants department. We used to congregate at the junior school and walk to the infants in crocodile formation. When at the primary department we used to do the same down to St,Edwards Church once a month for a service. The vicar used to come to the school again about once a month to give us lesson. It wasn't always based on religion and sometimes would be a general knowledge competition, he would then award a prize. Even at that young age I noticed that the prize always went to a boy. Nearly having won on one occasion I remember being quite miffed as one of my answers was the abbreviation (NATO) so was consequently not allowed as The Right Reverant Wright said that it was not a proper word. I wonder how many ten year olds would know about that organization nowadays. My mother wouldn,t let me go to the senior school because there were boys there (perish the thought) so I was despatched to Heath Park girls school at the age of eleven.Happy days, old Edwardians.

Best wishes to you all

Jenny

Jennifer Ramsay( nee Miller)

Please find attached a photograph that was taken at a school play about William Caxton (not sure what year - possibly 1956-7ish) I am pictured here operating the printing press

My Mum and Dad made my costume - I was supposed to be William Caxtons Assistant Printer seen pulling the lever - I wanted to wear a sword and have a a hat with a plume too but the directors/teachers wouldn't let me?

I was seriously pissed off as my class mate (far right) who played Caxton was allowed to have one - Oh the Injustice of it!

I wonder if anybody recognises and can name anybody here?

Best Wishes      Steve Maher

Hi all.

Steve Maher (1956 to 1960) - My sister Veronica Maher was also at St Ed's (1954 - 1959) Recently had a phone call from ex St Ed'ian Robert Parsons who set me to thinking about the old days.

Would love to know if any of the old classmate are about and what they are up too.

I moved with my family to Sydney Australia in 1989 - now a semi retired Musician & Recording Engineer.

Being a slacker in those days I was in the C Class with the other slackers - I can remember the following classmates:

Brian Flude (Who I am in touch with and now lives in Spain) John Washington Melvin Davis Kevin Coughlan, Frederick  Lomas, Alan Pike (who sadly died in a bike accident 1960)

Christopher Woolley

There must be more but sadly the old brain cells are dropping off :-) Please get in touch if you remember me?

Does anyone remember me Philip Cross or my sister before me Susan ?  casacruzpg@yahoo.co.uk

Does anyone know if John Healey ever made it to the Royal Phylharmonic ?( Never could Spell !! )

Hi. I am Edwin Stevens, I was a pupil as St Edwards from 1957 to 1962 and have only just found this website (Now Nov 2011).I have many fond memories and would  be delighted to hear from anyone who remembers me or was at the school at around that time. Please email me at edwinstvns@yahoo.co.uk  I look forward to a rush of replies, but even 1 would be great.

My name was JENNIFER HAMMOND and, together with my twin sister BARBARA, entered St. Edward's Secondary School in September 1950.  We had been at the primary school since we were 8 years old.  I can remember Mr Cuthbert who taught in the Juniors.  He used to bring his dog, a red setter, to school and the dog spent the day laying under Mr Cuthbert's desk.  There was also a teacher who, I think, was named Mrs. de Georgis.  She used to take us for singing and elecution.  I often think of her on a day when the sky is a bright blue and cloudless, because she always used to tell us to "look out of the window at an Italian sky".  On our admission to Secondary school Barbara went into the "A" stream and I went into the "B" stream.  My form master was Mr Prescott, who had just come out of the army and had apparently been a pupil of Dr. Davies years before.  Mr Prescott taught Geography and in the first term I studied Japanese, little knowing that 40 years later my youngest son would be living there.  I remember Miss Hale, who once gave me the cane for playing up in the Curate's religion lesson.  Mr Hutchinson, who taught art, was also the Housemaster of Bosworth - my house - the Red House.  Mr Osborne taught science, Miss Sloan either Domestic Science or needlework, Mr Bennet maths and Miss Rushby took P.E. and games, also country dancing.  Mrs Sinclair taught history.  She also took the Scottish Dancing Club after school.  I think Mr Palmer was the music master.   I loved my time at St. Edwards and the education I received stood me in good stead, because I always had jobs where I worked alongside Grammar School people and never felt inadequate.

When I left school I worked for a short time as a clerk in a wholesale tobacconists in Romford.  Then I went to London to work at a large Insurance Company, where I met my husband.  We have been married 50 years this year and have two sons, one who lives near to us and the other in Japan.  He has been there for nearly 20 years and is married to a Japanese girl.  They have two lovely sons.  Our elder son has three children.  We have lived in Kent ever since we were married.

Sadly Barbara died in 1994.  She was divorced years before then, but left two children, both now in their 40s who I am close to.  The children of her daughter call us Grandma and Grandpa as our own grand children do.

I would love to hear from anyone who remembers Barbara or myself, especially Pat Arthur  (she had a twin named Philip), Margaret Strudwick, Pamela Cook, Yvonne Holman (who I met up with many years ago, she at that time lived in a village near where I live, but we lost touch again). JENNIFER CORNISH  nee HAMMOND

The reunion was an excellent opportunity to expel some of the myths surrounding my schooldays at St Ed’s unfortunately the  pages for the pertaining  period was missing from the Punishment Book! So I want to make it known that I never did break Mr. Barrett’s cane  and hand it back to him, as Barrie MacMurtrie  implies. Nor was I responsible for a certain RE teachers breakdown as others have said.  The other stuff, the smoking bush and flying burning test paper airplanes out of windows, pinching leather ties from Stones. Well I don’t remember them but the more I think about it I think it was Chris Walford, or Ian Potter, or Brian Green.  Anyway we all have fifty years before the next big one. Maybe we can get the stories right then. In the meantime if anyone wants to dispute the facts my new email address is gmartin@willmarnet.com

Best wishes from the colonies, Greg Martin.

I travelled up from Bournemouth having seen the Reunion advertised almost by accident.

My sister Elaine and I both had very different reasons for needing to visit the hallowed corridors again and can admit to many dreams (nightmares?) in the weeks running up to 1st May ……….

……….. we needn't have worried.  From the moment I drove into the car park (a treat in itself) to the minute we walked through the glass doors all of our fears and preconceptions vanished.

The first to see us was Valerie Yates (nee Scanlon).  A girl I had been at both Junior and Senior school with and who looked not a day older.  Our friendship was reignited and I found myself calling Mr Yates Malcolm!!  How pleased I am to find out that their relationship is over 25 years old and how I laughed when Malcolm accused me of being one of the sisters from Cranford as I described the fact that I have stayed single (not by choice I might add - humph).

The tour around the school was amazing - not least because we had such a delightful guide but because there was to be 'access all areas'.  So many of the old bits were still the same (art room, swimming pool showers, domestic science class including the same cookers if I am not mistaken) along with the slightly battered doors and dare I mention the springboard and horse in the old gym!

I was not the only one to notice first the absence of the drinks machine and second the general clutter in the area (tut tut) - surely a Health and Safety hazard !? LOL - or maybe it was to stop the clandestine meetings that often took place under the stairwell there?

I embarrassed my sister as I said loudly 'Ooooooooh there's Gary', knowing she had fancied him from afar.  Gary duly stopped and was more than polite in his conversation with us Bless him.  It was great seeing Vince and Andy Earl - two guys that I knew more in my post St Ed's years but instead of reminiscing about those days we only talked of the school - such is the power of 'The Reunion'.

The 6th Form Suite had changed little (very little) - I'm guessing smokers corner is no longer used - and where was the TV that I remember watching The Buggles, Video Killed the Radio Star on in a room now filled with computers and tables?  How things have changed.  The exhibition was marvellous and it is a shame I found out too late to include my own photos of a School Trip to Brittany on the canals with Mr Aylet, Barry Clipsham, Frank Corkhill, Mr Werner and others in charge and myself, Louise Heathfield, Elaine Heathfield, Lisa Hughes, Cheryl Holbrook and Debra Gunthorpe who all shared a boat together and many laughs and tears I might add.  How great then to actually bump into Lisa and make the memory complete.

As we returned to the main foyer I missed the exposed brickwork previously populated with the various 'House' information board, Cook, Swift, Hawk and ………………….?  The other missing memory was the two ominous chairs that sat outside the Headmasters Office and the fear they instilled (not that I ever suffered that fate but the threat was there).

There are now very happy memories in my head and the 'closure' I have been seeking since 1981 has been achieved.  Alongside this is a renewed friendship for both Elaine and I in Valerie and Lisa and the pleasure in knowing that none of us looked a day older!!

I noticed other names on the table that I would dearly have loved to see, Jane Woodhouse in particular.  If you read this Jane please get in touch - both Val and I talked fondly of you.  Elaine missed Sheila Wiggins who now coincidently lives in Bournemouth and does my mums garden (small world!).

>We left the building behind and walked across the small bridge towards the playground and area where the daily 'bundle' for the 248 bus had taken place.  One final memory ………… being thrown in the ditch as a 1st year along with a football I owned at the time ……………….. but that’s another story ……

To all I met again, those I missed and to everyone involved in the spectacular event I say "Thank You".  If I am around in 2035 I will see you again - but hopefully not as a spinster!

Please email me if you remember Louise (Big Girl) Heathfield at   louisehh4@hotmail.com  - I don't hold a grudge - honest!LOLx

1st year Class 1974 with Mr Birkett
Left in 1980

Dear Committee,

Graham Wright and myself would like to thank you all for all the hard work which obviously went into the day.We enjoyed the day and evening catching up with old friends and teachers.  Graham and I left in 1967 and only met up a year ago and now are together.  St Edwards then was a strict school but it certainly did us no harm.

Thank you all again.
Best wishes,

Barbara Lilley

I started my schooling in "The Huts" in Mrs. Cobett's class.  I can't  say I look back on my school days with fondness but would be  interested to know how others of this period have fared.

Marion Sturman nee Riley    (1955 - 1967)                 marion.sturman@btinternet.com

Post Reunion.

First a big thank you to all the people that made it happen.
Second, an equally big thank you to all the people that made me feel so welcome. I never realised that I was at school with so many glamorous ladies and fine upstanding gentlemen!

It was my first contact with the school and Romford  for some thirty years or more, I will admit that I was a little nervous!
However, there was no need to worry, it was a tremendous day out.
The group photo went well, apart from Janet Ellis having to be told to sit still and stop chattering, as usual; I can not wait  to see it.
On the way home my tired old, buzzing brain was 'peopled-out' and I was looking forward to getting back to the quiet wilds of Sudbury.
But now, after a good nights sleep I have begun to wonder about all the other people I knew at school and what had happened to them.
Do get in touch if you have the time  jamesewheatley@talktalk.net

And to all of you; as that great philosopher JW once said:-

Remember to enjoy life, as life may be just a brick!

Good fortune

James Wheatley (1964-1971).

Hello - I'm Andy Sparkes 1965 - 1971 and it all seems like yesterday since I found this message board.  They were the best years of my life, like being part of one huge family and that includes the staff, and I just want to give everyone a huge hug. We never realise what people mean to us until we are apart from them. I'm going to send some photos for the album. Camp, Scottish Expd., Sports, Etc.

I left school and played in a number of bands for a while - nothing much happened but there was a sort of following. Only started to take off as a musician once I went out on my own. Wrote lots of songs for me and others and toured a lot - they were good years.  Later made a career in retail - worked with Conran opening Habitat stores up and down the country and in France. Never really clicked and so I joined the Industrial Society and spent several years in a very public role as Director.  Got out in '89, and these days I run my recording studio which just about breaks even due to the fact I keep finding broke musicians who need a kick start, and I vocal coach a bit and judge a few contests.  I also work as a part time management consultant now and again which does earn money and thus the bills are paid. I'm a trustee for the YMCA and other bits and pieces to keep the grey matter working.
I've lived in France, Canada and the Philippines where I worked for Plan International for a time setting up school rooms for kids in the "out" country. I was held at gun point for three days by the PLA who thought I was a Marcos sympathiser - yes it's true and I've got a photo to prove it - Plan had to negotiate my release!  Been married five times - that's the music business for you.  But now have two teenage sons (one adopted) and a beautiful 9 year old daughter. (I left it a bit late and just got to keep going now to see her through her teens!) We live in Solihull in the Midlands and anyone and every one is welcome to come visit, stay, drop in or move in.......

I just can't begin to say how much joy I felt when I looked through the photo album and read all the messages. So many memories suddenly became vivid in my mind. I want to get in touch with anyone and every one who can remember me and put up with an email or a chat.  The studio web site is made2measuremusic.com.  My myspace music (some of my songs are on there) is myspacemusic  made2measuremusicoffical.  My email is atever2000@yahoo.co.uk.

Don't be shy - please.  Have car - can and will travel anywhere for a cup of coffee!   Andy.

Hello everybody, I have just found this message board by accident, looking for information about the 2010 reunion! My name was Valerie Acres when I was at St. Edwards School from 1970-1977. I have lots of good memories of fun days and of a fairly traditional education. I loved the school dinners and being in the school brass band with Mr. Birkett, who gave freely of his time. Does anybody else remember getting changed behind the thick curtain on the stage for PE when the "new block" was under construction?! Also, I can remember watching old black and white films on a screen in the school hall at the end of term. Sometimes, we were treated to a James Bond film! I went through the school with Kim Elwood, Stella Botham, Karen Bonnett, Pamela Watts, Angela Watts, Gillian Letch, Keith Spurgeon, Nigel Rogoff, Chris Stanfield, Martin Mason,Gary Brown to name a few. Would love to hear from anybody out there who remembers me. I played the trumpet! E-mail: vtimmers@tiscali.co.uk

Hi, I'm one of those who signed up in 1969 by the maiden name of Carole Harris. I came across the web site some four hours ago & got hooked. I've read everything! The names from the past came flooding back to me along with the memories.I believe I've got a photo taken at a school fete somewhere in the loft of myself, Louise Morton. Sue Roe & Helen Knights. I still see Delia White & Mary Green (maiden names) in Chelmsford. However I still go to Romford every month & look around to see if I recognise anyone but I do believe we've all changed. Hope to make the reunion in 2010.

Hello,

I attended St Edwards from 1945 to 1949.

Among my classmates were:-
Danny Bolton,  Malcolm Wadlow, Barry Easy, James Hewitt, David Cubitt, Michael Wiseman, John Smith, Maggie Dawson, Beryl Webb. Jill Sutcliffe, all of who I particularly recall.
Our teachers were;-
The newly appointed Dr F Davies who brought with him some fresh approaches, one of which was that he encouraged the staff to wear academic gowns, he himself always wore his gown, collar and mortarboard at assembly each morning.
On the staff were the chain smoking Mrs. K.U. Perry who was one of the best teachers I ever had, it is to her I owe my love of books.  Mrs. D.M. Winslade who we had for maths, we used to ask her questions completely unrelated to maths, and get her sidetracked off the subject. She used to refer to our efforts as 'Red Herrings'.  There was Mr C.M. Jones who took us for art and geography and spent his spare time making cricket bats.  Mr Clarke, newly out of the RAF who sported a large holdall bag bearing his former rank (Squadron Leader). He measured our worth mainly on sporting prowess.  There was a very young Mr. Folland an ex Sub Lieutenant R.N. who used to mimic Danny Kaye.  Mrs D. Hale who called a spade a shovel!  We had a music teacher whose name escapes me, he sported a cropped haircut, wore baggy tweeds and taught us Russian marching songs about the 'Steppes' and 'Bold Red Army Heroes '; we all suspected (rightly) that he was somewhat left wing and was trying to convert us. Our sports and science teacher (name gone again) was the proud owner of an old 1932 Austin Ten which he would drive at great speed in a cloud of exhaust fumes. Our woodwork teacher (name gone) took us into making cigarette boxes from plastic, a new material at that time and involved the use of ethylene di chloride as a solvent , heady stuff if you accidently inhaled it. (very non health and safety).
Behind the Quadrangle building was a large piece of rough ground (later temporary class rooms were erected on it). In the winter this would become waterlogged and freeze over. We would arm ourselves with suitable sticks and broom handles and with a puck fashioned in woodwork, we would play our version of ice hockey with teams of up to twenty or more.
Happy days indeed.
If any of the above named classmates, (or any whose names I have forgotten) are still at large, drop me an E Mail if you are so disposed.

Just came by this site by accident, and have been smiling for the last half hour reading the message board.
I was a pupil at both junior and senior school, joining the senior school in 76, i think
Anyway I am sure someone is bound to correct that, i was always being corrected for one thing or another, Mr Davis, the cane, Bill Stallard, the slipper or judo belt ! Happy days !

No regrets. I guess i had better introduce myself, my name is David Harris, younger and certainly the more handsome than my elder bruv, Gareth.

I didn't really try hard at school, i still have the school reports to prove it, I left after one day in the sixth form  with only two O levels.

One of those was french ( what was all that about! ) and i was never any good at ingilllish.
I went on to Barking College and left with ten O's at the end of that year.
Well i thought i'd better pull me socks up, god I've just remembered wearing shorts in the 1st Year of senior school. Oh hooooooooow embarrasing.

I worked as a grave digger by day and a door man at night, sorry if i ever kicked you out of the Ilford Palais on a friday night.

I am now worth millions and millions............................................. if i ever get to live in China that is.

I can't really tell you exactly what i do now for a living - not allowed.Yes there are still people even now telling what i can and can't do.
Don't worry nothing dodgy, just long hours and loads of fun.
I joined the Old Edwardian Rugby Club at 16 and played until injury forced my retirement at 38. Now that club was brilliant !

If you ever need anything done to your house, join a rugby club, all the trades, all walks of life and a saving of thousands when it comes to DIY.

I went to the re union for our year a couple of years ago.
I think it was Jane Gilbert who organised that, thank you.
Me, two crates of Stella with Dave Portsmouth, Steve Hunt, Tony Milner and Doug Brand as drinking buds for the night, oh and for the previous 20 years.

Great night. I'd love to go to another one, even if not for my year, or school.
If truth be known a lot of chaps went onto play for the Old Boys side, they nicknamed me 'Pup'.
Fantastic memories, fantastic mates and what rugby tours oh what rugby tours.
Anyway not married anymore, but happy with sin. My bodies a temple, it gets sacrificed every Saturday night.
I retire in 6 years then off to run a pub in America.

Also starting another business venture in the New Year.
To the teachers who remember me, I still misbehave. To the friends I've lost touch with, sorry.
You all have my e mail now.
Be lucky out there.

Andrew & Jan Potter (she was Gearing then) at St Teds between 1965 and 1972 between us.  Attended reunion of our era in 2002, 30 years after I had left.  It was great to meet again with some familiar and others not so familiar faces.  Sadly we could not stay to the end as we had to be in Cornwall that night.  We live in Marston Moretaine near Bedford now and run a couple of businesses from home.  I still go fishing as I did when I was a kid though a lot of time is taken up with cricket these days both as a player and Umpire.  Still see David Rose regularly, he lives in Colchester now.  I had brothers David & Bill before me at the school and Jan's elder sister, Ann was there & married Steve Ridgers from the school.

My new email is andrew@millenniumgoldoils.co.uk .  Please do contact me.

KATHLEEN JOY (Now BUCHLER) Hello to all who may remember me.  1963-1968.  I did not think I would ever do something like this.  However, I remember from my year the following people, who, if anyone is in contact with them to let them know where I am contactable if they wish to do so: Janice Bishop, Linda Worcester (she doesn't appear on the entry list for some strange reason?). Valda Lewis, Janece Lilley (she loved Nigel when she left but I don't think she married him!).Yvonne Skelton, Frances Dixon, Christine Southgate, Jackie and Jillian Barton, Shirley Watson and many others.

The school was situated in the marketplace in my first year and I remember slipping out at lunchtime through broken fencing to use my dinner money, with friends of course, at the fish and chip shop which meant circumnavigating the church and the shop was just behind.  Wonderful.  I think we were only caught once.  After eating our forbidden meal my friends and I would walk around Stones Department store and then back to school.

My school days were not my best, though there are certain things I remember with affection.  Does anyone remember Miss Craig (poor thing, she dribbled when she spoke and her teeth splayed; she really did need a good orthodontist) but she was exceedingly kind.  Mr Saul, my English teacher, drumming into everyone not to begin a sentence with But nor And.  Furthermore, he was extremely particular about the use of the word GOT "it is not a word" he would inform us and then ask us to rewrite our essays omitting the 'got or'get' and finding something far more descriptive - I enjoyed each and every lesson.  Mr Nicholls the RE teacher?  I thought he was old then.  I remember we asked him his age, at the time, and he said that he was 26; we, on the other hand, must have been around 16 so he would by now only be 60 or 61?  Horrifying isn't it?  I remember Miss Pattison for her prooonunciaation.  We had to address our female teachers by calling them ma'am.  I didn't know anyone else at other schools having to use this bizarre form of courtesy and thought it pretty odd but then our beret was unlike other schools too.  Miss Pattison would tell us that "St. Edward's 'gals' were special and that we should set an example to each other and especially those who did not attend our school.  Taff or Taffy, as she was known (I think her real name was Miss Sinclair) would say "we don't want any parasites feeding on the backs of others".  I can't remember how many times she said this.

I am married and live in France, Le Touquet.  I have one daughter of 13 years of age and she is studying here in a private french school.  I worked for many years - I couldn't settle down - having too much fun.  My first job was as a legal secretary and eventually I worked as the secretary to Lord Boyd-Carpenter of the Civil Aviation Authority and after that worked for a well known economist - just a few of the things I have done since leaving St. Edward's.

Finally, if anyone wishes to contact me then all they have to do is to logon to: kathleen.charlotte@wanadoo.fr and I will be more than happy to hear from them.

I do not have any school photos I am afraid but if you are like me sometimes you will perhaps remember a face but not a name or the other way round so I've included a couple of photos THEN and NOW.

Hello

My name is John Boden and like many others found this site by accident. I attended The Senior school between 1960 and 1967, five years in the  Market Place and two years in the hut at the new site. I have mixed memories of my time at the school.

I remember sitting the streaming exam and joining Mrs Sinclair in 1B. Vising the Tryst at lunchtime and walking through the market eating a loaf of bread.

Being slippered at a Wednesday morning House meeting for losing three points knowing that someone else had written them in and protesting my innocence.

The winter of 1963 when the open air toilets had coke braziers to keep them thawed (Mr Thomas had to speak to the boys about urinating in the braziers!)

Compulsory church attendance and being made to learn long tracts of the Communion Service.

Geography A Level field trips with Mr Parsons.

Finally being told by Mr Thomas a few months before I left that the only mark I would be leaving was my name carved into a desk top.

Many other memories- the best years of our lives I 'm not sure about that. Anyone else out there from the swinging sixties?    jboden@beeb.net

Hi Everyone,
So Ann Bonner thinks that she is O
ldest Edwardian  does she ?
My name is Laurence (
Laurie) Dow and  I think that I can say that there will not be many left of my age as I started at St Edwards  school around 1934/5  in what was then the fairly new building behind the Romford Library. Ithink that a Mrs Negus was then the Headmistress of the Infants/junior school and a Mr Newling was the head of the Senior school.
I moved to the senior school in 1938 and I still have the certificate for swimming 2 lengths of the swimming baths in Mawneys
Road.   When I started at St Edwards, we used to live in the formans house in the grounds of the Romford Gas Works as my father was the works foreman.
I used to have to walk to school from Nursery Walk through the tunnel under the railway, down Cotleigh Road along London road up through the market place and turn in before the Library, the turning was opposite the Laurie Cinema and the war memorial.  If anyone is interested, they can Email me at:- led1448@aol.com and I will do my best to make it interesting for them.    As a matter of interest I will be 76 in July and I have just lost my wife with cancer so any new friends to write to will be very welcome.
Wishing all the school all the best for the future  from Laurie Dow

Hi,
I am Susan Welch who attended St. Edward's 1960-64.  That's me in the front row of the 250th anniversary photo.  Next to me is Linda Jones and another chum, whose name I just can't remember.  I remember Valerie Bowers and Hilary Inson were good friends.  In reading through the messages on this site, a couple of names are familiar although I don't think we knew each other well - Carol Harcombe and Ray Bateman (I think we might have known each other through detention as I always seemed to be  in trouble in those days).  Anyway after leaving St. Edward's in 1964, got a job for a couple of years and then immigrated to Canada in 1966.  Lived in Toronto for 10 years and moved to Peterborough, Ontario to take a job at Trent University - and am still here, hoping to get out on early retirement in the next few years.  I too, remember school camp in the New Forest.  I seem to remember one year when we had several disasters - somebody broke their jaw playing rounders, another fell off the pulley, another Ann somebody who got bitten by an adder and me, well I was sitting in the water at Piddle Bridge when somebody threw a rock and hit me in the head.  I remember well Harry Thomas' plum duff and I also remember making scotch eggs.  My brother Richard also attended St. Edward's (class of 1956) and remembers chums Ian Dunford, Martin Hammond and Martin Hunns (both Ian and Martin Hunns ended up in Australia I believe).  Richard is also in Canada but is clear on the other side of this huge country near Vancouver, B.C.  I know I have some old black and whites of time at camp which I will search out one of these days and send along.  If anyone wants to get in touch with either of us, my e-mail is
swelch@trentu.ca.

Susan Welch (class of 1960)
Richard Welch (class of 1956)

I attended both St.Edwards Primary and Senior schools-the primary school at that time was in the Market Place.Who remembers Mr.Davis (the Head) Mrs.Corbett (the Deputy) Mr Richardson, Mr Rimmel  Mrs Wackett Mrs Roberts Miss Cakebread Miss Vigars Mrs Wilding Mr Lewis Miss Redgrave and the dinner lady I remember as Mrs Garlic!!!.Who remembers the old school canteen with loads of great school dinners real dinners in those days served to us by the dinner monitors with huge bowls of flavoured custard? Does anyone remember the school toilets being in an outside building-they were SO ccold in the winter-you didn't even want to go!!! And the outside swimming pool-no cover and mostly no heating but what a memory!!

And in 1973 I started at the senior school where Mr Thomas was the Head and Miss Martlew and Mr Webber the Deputies other senior teachers Miss Arnold and Mr Birkett Lower School and Mr Barable and Mrs Mulligan Upper School.Miss Arthur and Mr Preston were the Art teachers and Mr Riley was my Maths teacher-does anyone know where he went? He was a really fantastic teacher.Mr Claydon had mad hair and used to get very angry with everyone all the time and Mr Arber used to be very keen on orienteering.Mr Prabharka is still around and runs Gaynes Cross Post Office in Upminster-I often say hello.I was madly in love with one of the sixth formers but he was madly in love with someone else!! I am teaching now, still in Havering (Junior children) and have three children aged 21,19 and 18 and still have my sanity (and teeth and hair-still red!!!) Would love to hear from anyone who remembers any of the above.
Love Adele (Collingwood)

I remember the Laurie cinema by the war memorial also the Romford Cattle market that I had to walk through each day to get to school before the world war 2 also going to school in the first two years of that war before leaving school at 14 years to start an apprenticeship to engineering , and at 17 volunteering for the R.E.M.E .
I remembe
r Mr Newling as headmaster, also Mr Allen that followed him. Mr Cowey was the woodwork/metalwork master, Mr Turner -took us for science, and Mr Clark was our form master, before being called up !!

To my former classmates,

It’s hard to imagine who might remember me out there from all those years ago, but my name is Richard Bartrum.  I first went to St. Edwards in 1948 to the Infants School where I do remember a Miss or Mrs. Vigar, I think the spelling is correct, and then to the Primary School where there were Mrs. Forbes and Miss. Redgrave. Sadly I’ve heard that Gwen Redgrave passed away recently. Finally of course, having failed the 11+  entered the Senior School where I remember Dr. Davies the headmaster but few others except perhaps for the geography teacher who would hit us boys on the head with a book if he thought we were not paying attention. As for my classmates I remember Heather Povey, Dennis Cripps, Barry Griffiths, Peter Viney, Valerie Bolton and Valerie Mann. I wonder where you all are now. I for myself live near Malága in Spain with my wife and daughter. If anyone out there remembers me, drop me a line.

Regards to you all,

Richard                richard@malagamusic.com

I have recently been told about this wonderful site by a former classmate.  Looking at the messages I realise I am one of the oldest 'oldies'.  My years at the school were from 1953-1959, so I doubt there will be many - if any, who remember me.  I started at the old huts in Western Road, walking through Mercury Gardens every day, and then progressed into the junior school in the Market Place.  My older brothers also went to the school -Ian and Jim Haines.

In my last year at the school, Mrs Roberts was the form teacher and Mrs Forbers, who frightened me to death, was the school secretary.   In that last year I remember the Head taking us outside to show us where the new swimming pool was going to be situated.  He was so proud of this new venture.  I also remember traipsing through the market with the rest of the school on a regular basis, in two's, to the church and along the way smelling the wonderful hops from the brewery.

Some of the classmates that I remember were John Deeks (who told me about this site), Linda Huband the Lovell twins (I had a real soft spot for Trevor) and the Lester twins.

After school, we sometimes called at the Tryst, for some 'black jacks' , trebor chews, or honeycombe.

It was a very sad to discover the old school's demise and how Romford has been altered over the years.  Somehow the soul seems to have gone, but it's heartwarming to know there are sites like this that bring memories back.

Hello I'm John Doyle and I was at St Edwards from 1952 in the huts at Western road to the Luxury of the 6th Form Bunker in 1962 found this web site by accident and would be interested to know what became of the year of 1962.As to me I am an Oracle Development Team Liaison Manager for a Transport industry company.

This message is from Christine Jutsum, who attended St Edwards 1959-1962.
Not at all sure I'm doing the right thing pasting this message, but here goes.

Have to say didn't enjoy school, and couldn't wait to leave (was told on the day I left that I would look back and realise they were the best days of my life.  Wrong).  However, was lucky enough to go on the very first CommercialCourse run by the school, and left at 16 with Pitmans and RSA qualifications
which have stood me in very good stead over the last 40 years (is it really 40 years !).  There is a photo of the 1959 class on the photo album, and I am sitting next to Mr Peedle.  I can name some of the others in that row. From left to right  Diane ???, Linda Caroll, Pamela Shaw, Diane Smith, ????, to the right of me, Anna Hudson, Margaret Smith,   Maureen someone I think.

Loved swimming, and as soon as school finished would frequent the verysmall, smelly and crowded, Romford pool.  Swimming companions - MargaretSmith, Pamela Shaw, Diane Smith and  Maureen McCarthy.  The other person I remember from my visits to the pool was David Pennington, whose father owned the nursery next to the old St Edwards school.  He took great delight in trying to drown me, by holding me under for rather long periods of time. Also remember a rather delinquent Guy Fawkes night in his father's nursery!

I moved to Oxford on leaving school, and worked for Oxfam for 6 years, then for the Chief Librarian, Oxford County Library.  Married, moved to Jamaica, came back and lived in Bristol, moved to Tanzania where my marriage broke up.  Came back to the UK, and lived in London with a guy I met in Tanzania. Next year we will have been together 25 years (in un-wedded bliss), and plan to celebrate by visiting China next May.  Live in Hertfordshire, and am PA to the Senior Vice President for Business Development in a company on the leading edge of 3G telecommunications.

Hope everyone I remember have had some good times over the last 40 years.

Christine

I was in Mr Prescotts class and Mr Davies was Head.  I wonder if any one of same period remembers me ?  I have been in contact with an old school  friend via Friends Reunited and have posted a school photo for 1951 but after so many years I can not remember all the names.  Can any one help? I would love to meet old school friends after all these years.

Thank you.     ps004c9239@blueyonder.co.uk

Have just had lunch with Peter Cecil (Head boy - 1960) and we were wondering if there are any other ex St. Edward's pupils in Australia that can be contacted.
Would love to hear from anyone.

Hi,  Jillian Warom (nee Barton)  here- I was at St. Edwards from 1963 - 1968 and would love to hear from any one in my years. My twin sister was in a different class to my own. I know she would love to hear how her Irish school mate Irene is. I have looked for news of the school since we had a computer, but did not put the correct name in the search!!  Hope to get some news soon.. Particularly great to hear of any re-unions  for those at the school  in the same years. (I have already given the 1966 re-union to my two younger sisters who started in that year). If Miss or Mrs. Roberts who was my form teacher in 1963 ever gets on to this site THANKYOU - I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN YOUR KINDNESS TO ME. Miss Burton too. (Who became Mrs. Megginson) THANKYOU.

Hi everyone,

Found this site via alumni.net.  I am listed in the 1960 class, I'm Carol Curtis nee Harcombe.  This site is just what I needed right now.  I have lived in Australia for the last 30 years and have been extremely fortunate and happy, but as a lot of you will understand as you mature (not get old), you do look back on your earlier life.

I have to say I have very fond memories of "Saints".  My sister Pennie and I have been having some wonderful phone calls (she lives here too) recalling our school years.

I loved  reading Annie Duncalf's account, but beg to differ on a couple of points.  I could have sworn the Science Lab was in the quadrangle next to the cloakroom with the filthy wash basins that nobody used. My memory of the berets is different too.  It could be because I was 3 years ahead but I remember only Prefects wearing tassels on their berets.  I too have fond memories of dear "old Taffy" - never did understand why a VERY SCOTTISH lady was given the welsh nickname anyone know why?

I recall going to school camp.  That and needlework were the only thing I was good at.  I noticed in the Obituary for Harry Thomas he continued his association with the New Forest.  His plumb duff was always produced with great ceremony wasn't it? The hikes we did around the campsite and going into Brokenhurst was always considered a treat.  We bought presents for the family which were nothing to do with our holiday.  I remember buying salad servers for my mum one year!

When Princess Margaret opened the new school I was "testing for starch" while those around me were cutting up "things" which Her Royal Highness was horrified to see and so she spoke to me - I even got my photo with her in the local paper.

I work in Aged Care here in Melbourne, Australia and the discovery of this site has given me wonderful information to impart to my residents.

If there is anyone out there who remembers either Pennie or myself we would love to hear from you.

Carol Curtis

Hi Everyone
I am David Milchard. Time served at St Edward's 1958 until 1963. 39 years have passed and can still smell the hops from the brewery. Collecting a cows eye from the slaughter house in the market place for science lessons. Bunking off from attending church on saint's days and getting the cane from the headmaster for doing so. Hours of fun and laughter in the old air-raid shelters and smashing windows
in the old Wacketts timber yard. Smoking in the boiler room. Showing the girls the Vicarage garden!!. Hiding under the stage at morning assembly. Nipping out of woodwork class returning just in time for the bell. Oh, and a couple of other activities I think were called Maths, English, History etc
etc etc not so much fun. It would be great to hear from any one from that era and if possible if you
can remember me and my twin brother Alan.

Dear All
The reunion was a great idea and a great success.  Jan and I (Janet Gearing & Andrew Potter) enjoyed meeting our peers again in many cases for the first time in 30 years.  Some of us had changed a lot and some you could almost put a school uniform on and they would hardly have changed at all, ( David Penfold in particular).  It was also good to see some of our former teachers there, even though at age 11 or 12 they scared the life out of me at the time, though John Parsons couldn't remember doing so now.  Remember how he started his geography lessons when half way up the stairs, with a booming voice that silenced a riotous classroom !  Many stories and reminisances were swapped and the only sad part was that we had to leave early, due to travelling to Cornwall that night, and departed at 9.45pm.
Our sincere thanks to the organisers who did a splendid job.  Let's not make it 30 years before the next one maybe 5 or 10 perhaps (though I believe there was one before that we did not know about), and to all those who missed it, you missed a great night and do try to get to the next one!
Best wishes to all
Andrew Potter

Hi All
Greetings from Angela Gee (nee: Tunbridge) having read through the messages left by past pupils, I am reminded of the first Computer lessons the school gave in 1967/68.  Those of us considered bright enough to cope with 'computer technology' were invited to the boys grammar school in Gidea Park.  My most vivid memory is of being in a classroom almost completely filled with a computer and being for the most part, totally overwhelmed with this machine which spewed out ticker tape with holes in!  To tell the truth, it put me off computers for some while. Since I left in 74, I have trained as a Nurse, been married, a mother, widowed and remarried.  I now work as a clinical coder for the Mid Essex Hospital Trust spending the greater part of my day on a P.C.  If we only knew then what we know now!  I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me or this era.  Where are you Brenda Watts, Hazel Golledge, Heather Tilley and Jenny Davies?
P.S Does anyone remember the trip to the Loire Valley in 1972?  I have some photo's if anyone is interested.  email:-
AnGee15@aol.com

After reading your message board I am horrified to discover that I will be the oldest entry having been at St. Eds old Junior School from 1947 -1953.
I don't remember any classmate names but I do remember having to take my younger sister to school and leaving her to join the 'crocodile' for the huts.
I also remember Mr. Cuthbert who gave me the 'ruler' for only getting 5 out of 10 for Maths. To this day I have never been able to do maths very well although I did go on to Grammar School and then Qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1964.  I still work in the NHS today.

Against the backdrop of the sad death of the Queen Mum, I remember the death of the king and being sent home early.

I have enjoyed visiting this excellent site and send greetings to any of us 'oldies' who are still around.

Hi.

Anyone remember me Richard Knight ? I don't remember that much about school - I seemed to be playing football, basketball, rugby ,cricket or athletics most of the time. Does anyone know what happened to Trevor Lyons! You know the one who got expelled.

Richardanddebbie@btinternet.com

Hi all.  John Dodd here.  I was introduced to this web site only recently by a friend, Barry McKay - we left St Eds in 1962.  Not too many names at all on the Message Board that I remember (although of course a few on the class list) but a couple ring a very distant bell.  I seem to recall Paul Stalham - you would have been in the year behind me Paul.  Yes Paul there are a few of us from that period out here.  O.J.Cullwick would have started the senior school the year I left.  The name Pamela Gough sounds familiar.  Pamela were you in the same year as Christine Ingle?  I remember this smashing girl that I admired from afar.  I was friendly with Christine's brother Melvyn - the Ingles lived opposite me.

I have lived in Australia since 1972 and only get the opportunity to return every few years.  Must say it was a shock some years ago (after the ring road was constructed in Romford) when I had difficulty finding the remains of the school - I was very disappointed.  I enjoy my life in Aus.  I am still hoping the English Cricket team will tour here and perform well - I plan to live till I am 80 at least, so there is an outside chance.   The English selectors should draw from St Eds it would have improved the success rate I feel sure.

Regards to Edwardians everywhere.

Greetings all you fortunate souls who attended that wonderful establishment that is St Edwards.  Graham Earl here, educated at the London Road site from `74 > `79.
Left at the end of the 5th year to do a 4 year apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, got married to Angie in `87 (not an edwardian, boooo!) then joined the good ol` Met Police in `93.
Still in touch with a couple of the chosen few, and fond memories of many more from that era, currently working in Hackney, just down the road from that equally delightful place called Stoke Newington, nice !
Be good to hear from anyone who remembers me, even if its only to vebally abuse me for my profession, don't be shy, mail me at Graham.Earl@btinternet.com

Bart Frith - My name is Julia and we last met at Belle and Mels wedding. I would love to get in contact with Belle again as we have had a couple of nursing reunions that she has missed and no one seems to know where she is or what she's up to. If you could pass on this I'd be  grateful. P.S. How are you?!

Well, Hello everyone,
From the damp huts at Western Road , Rumford, that was in 1961, with Mrs Cakebread, progressed to the Market Place, where Miss Redgrave, Mrs Vigars, and a certain Mr Davies [headteach], lets see, also Mr Badman, [think he was welsh].
Anyway a few names , John Baxter, Donald Leach, Richard Snaith, gosh I can see most of the faces but names have dissolved with the brain I think!!!!. Jeremy Upton,er!!!.
Well thats a few , Best introduce myself really, Robert Cloke,Started in 1961-1972, all the whole three steps , had a wonderfull time there, one thing that really sticks in my head, was dear ol Harry Thomas, got caught [apparantly] telling a certain teacher who was on the No 86 bus at the time, that I had sworn at him, and it was not nice, but there you go , I was pulled into Harrys office, and threatened with the 'deadly' cane he was sitting there playing with it in his hands , and you could see the pleasure he got by installing the fear of god in me,anyway my good ol mate Pete Middleton had the guts to come in there with me to stick up for me and to say that I did not swear at this teacher, end of the day I got away with it, thanks to good ol Pete.
Oh, I have not seen anywhere yet a mention of the deputy head , Mr R A Webber, he was a nice man , very understanding,
Ok bye all for now, see some of you soon this year Email if you wish, its    skippy@playroom1.fsnet.co.uk
All the Best to all of you   Robert [Bob] Cloke

Hello! I hope life has treated you all kindly. I was at St Ed's from 1966 - 1973. Although I jumped on my beret (which was also in a muddy puddle if I remember rightly) on the day I left, I do look back with such nostalgia and fondness. I think our teachers did us proud on the whole. I am grateful for my time at the schooI. I am still in touch with some old chums - Liz (nee Wells), Rita (nee Alam), Cheryl (nee Turner), Chris Glensman, Peggie (nee Dark), Jane (nee Grant), Julia (nee Illingworth), and Jill (nee Bathurst). Where's everyone else???? How are you????

Hi I’m Adrian Ogle and I started in 1958 at the infants’ school in Mrs Cakebread’s class – cold, drafty huts in Western Road! In 1960 I remember the whole school junior and secondary travelling in London buses to St Paul’s Cathedral for the 250th anniversary thanksgiving service. I also remember the huge cake (or several cakes) with 250 candles – it’s in the primary school picture, and I’m in there somewhere too. A few months before moving to the secondary school I was fortunate to attend the stone laying ceremony for the new school at London Road.

Mr Shrubsole made metalwork very enjoyable and some of the items I made have managed to survive for almost 40 years. Other teachers were Mrs Sinclair (English), Mr Parsons (Geography), Mr Barrett (Maths), Miss Craig (RE), Mr Gerry Thomas and Mr Male (PE/Games), Mr Alum and Mr Morrell (History) and Mr Alden (Physics and short wave radio) who I can still hear shouting the call sign G3VUN over the airways ‘golf three victor uniform November’.

During a hockey game I was hit on the head with a hockey stick and had to go to Oldchurch Hospital for a couple of stitches – I was taken by three sixth formers in their car and as soon as we drove out of the school gates they took out cigarettes, lit up and said ‘don’t say anything about this’. By the 5th form I was involved in backstage work for school productions and this was something I continued for some 12 years after leaving school in 1969 at the age of 16 when I went to work for Sainsbury.

I’ve lost touch with everyone from school and often wonder what happened to people like Stephen Mayes, Peter Dungay, Keith Walker, Norman Ashman, and Marilyn Wootton. For me I moved to the Far East in 1978 intending to stay for 2 years and ended up moving back to the UK 17 years, one wife and two children later. I now live in Middlewich Cheshire and work as an enterprise adviser helping community businesses and charitable groups.

Hi old Edwardians! I don't know if anyone remembers me, Judy Fenton. I went to the Junior School, then moved up to the Comprehensive in '70. Left in '72 whilst in the 2nd year to join my Dad in Hong Kong (RAF). I used to be friendly with Karen Boult and Kay Edwards, and was inthe same year as Sue Pateman, Gary Wilson, Stephen Plunkett etc. Had a huge crush on Richard Cooper, and a secret one on Nigel Rogoff. Have fond memories of St.Ed's particularly a trip to Switzerland - worst channel crossing ever, and a certain teacher (who shall remain nameless) passing out in the train toilets!!! Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

Hello, my name is Nina Warren (nee Pointing).

Is there anyone out there who remembers the good old days during 84 - 90?

I left the sixth form business studies class and moved on to employment and saw 10 years of computing within the insurance industry.  I am now a happily retired housewife and mum!

I've seen a few old faces around the area and heard a few voices from the other end of the country.  And I am now wondering if there is any other life to be found!
P.S. yes - I am still mad about yachting!!!
Hi, my name is Andrew Brown I was at St Edwards between 1983-1990,I am now married and would love to hear from anyone out there.             andybrown@hotmail.com

Hi, I attended St Eds from 1965 to 1970.  I was Janet Gearing then and later married Andrew Potter also an Edwardian as his previous message shows.  I would like to hear from old classmates particularly Mandy Ross  who was my best friend at school and whom I lost touch with many years ago.

My sister Ann Gearing preceded me from 1962 to 1968.  She also married an Edwardian, Steve Ridgers.  Any contacts for them can contact me via: millenniumgoldoils@ntlworld.com

My father Mr (now Rev.) D. Lusby taught at St Edwards briefly I'm not sure how many years - at least 2, maybe as many as 4) in the late '60s/early '70s, teaching English and History.  I'm putting together a
scrap-book for his 75th birthday next year, and I'd like to hear from anyone who remembers him, either positively or negatively.

Greetings, I was a pupil at the St Edward's infant/,junior and progressed to the Secondary school  in 1961 where I stayed until 1966. My final class year was known as 5g. I recall moving to the new school from the old premises which were in Romford market place. I well remember the headmaster Harry Thomas and his no 2 G.Davies as well as the Headmistress Miss Patterson, and of course the rev. Wright, who would give anyone the slipper at the slightest chance. I am now 51years, have been retired for 7 years and now live in Norfolk. Would love to hear from any ex 5ger's.

I was a pupil at St Edwards from 1987-1994 and will probably be remembered as a counterpart of Lucy Harding, Chinyelu Oranefo and Helen Ashton. If you were part of the merry 5th form gang who left in 1992 and got drunk over the park, contact me at sorreldavies@hotmail.com

Steve Holder, joined after the 13+ around the 2nd year, left at the end of the 5th and did my A levels at Rush Green College of Further Education before going to Liverpool Uni. I was the only kid in the 4th year willing to run the mile for Wykeham House on Sports day, I came in last but have not stopped running since. Last year I ran the London and New York Marathons. I was the worst kid at gym! Please note current students who think they will never be athletes! I left St. Edwards at the end of the 5th year in 1970. I remember the 5th form old wooden huts at the back of the school, the lunch time bridge tournaments and Chinese patience.
Derek Gooding and myself recently hooked up via email. I am in the states now for 17 years but frequently go back to the UK for business or to visit family.

Hi to all of you who were at the market place from 1957---1963 Paul Stalham (alias Hooky) is alive and well and living in Southend-on-Sea , Essex. I often wonder why no one from my era ever features on this board, but then realised that there are probably a lot of us that look but don't sign on like I used to. Come on don't be shy we have all got older not just you, send an email now. Let's see how many of us are still about. Best regards Paul Stalham

Where are all those souls that signed up in 69?
Did everyone from this vintage year disappear or just spread their wings to far to reach back in time to make contact with all the others that brought a brick for the swimming pool?
If you started this year why not post a message?

I'm Nick Hannant ('Huts' 1960 to London Road 1973). Would love to hear from anyone from my era (or close). I'm in touch with a few others as well!

Hi, I was at St Edwards from 1973-1980 and have lost contact with everyone except Ruth Williams, my name then was Laura Chumbley, I would love to hear from anyone from my year.

Reading all these glowing remarks about the old school makes me wonder if there are two St Edwards - only joking...  a little. I was one of two who were offered a place in the sixth form and then decided to quit school. I left and did a seven year apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, I now run my own business from Romford doing restoration work on listed buildings in London. The 'in crowd' in my time was Steve Jeffries, Steve Hobdell, Mick Stump, Chris Beaumont, Alan Vigars, Colin Proctor, Clive Bush, Glen Abbott.....The girls Sue Tracey, Sandy McRae, Shelia McNorton, Sue Stacy, Pam Loom, Jenny Mayes, Gillian Becket, Gillian Ross.... Hey they really were good days now I mention all those names. I wonder where they all are drop me a line.

Hi there, for those of you that may remember my sister and I, (Corrine and Penny) both in the same year of St Edwards from 74-79.  I found this site by logging onto the Friends reunited web site where an ex Edwardian recommended logging on the the Old Edwardian site.  Well a lot of water has gone under the bridge since 79 - doing 8 years in the Army, living in Germany for 10 years, 2 beautiful girls, a divorce, re-marriage and now living in Bermuda (It's a hard life!!!)  My feet haven't touched the ground since leaving school but it's been a great life.  Corrine for those of you that remember her is now living in Hong Kong - ex Director at CNN (the American news channel) and now a new mum to a beautiful daughter.  Anyone out there know what happened to Karen Warry, Paula Smith - I'm still in touch with Nadine Cutting - anyone else out there??

Hello.
Ian King here. Was at St. Eds until 91 I think (it was a long time ago). Used to associate with the likes of Marc Cullender, Daniel Brockhurst & Richard Tomalin etc. Moved after leaving school and worked in London. Returned to live in Romford for a brief spell as I tried a career in crime. Became disheartened when I realised it was nothing like "Goodfellas" and Hollywood had lied to me again. Now living in Chelmsford at present and work as a Network Administrator in local government.
Drop me a line at
ian.king@chelmsfordbc.gov.uk if you remember me and want to catch up.

Last year I returned to England for a brief visit and had the good fortune to bump into an old class mate. This after 24 years has given me the impetus to reflect back to those wonderful days when I attended St Edwards 1972-1977.
I have lived in Canberra (believe it or not the Capital of Australia) for 12-13 years and have only been back to Romford once in all that time. So imagine my surprise when at a friend's wedding in Hornchurch I met up with Janet Loftus, we didn't recognise each other at all, in fact it was only after a few drinks I managed to make the connection.
Needless to say it was a memorable moment, and made me think that the past is important.
I have very fond memories of those days, so if anyone from that era is tuning in , please get in touch. Would love to hear from you.
I have never forgotten those Teachers some of whom are still there, as I see form looking at the website. John Aylett, Bill Stallard. In my day Harry Thomas ruled the roost and Mr Barrable wasn't far behind.
I actually caught up with the old Australian English Teacher Richard Hopkins here in Canberra about 10 years ago, but apart from that have had little contact.
My Sister Julie Morgan also lives here, is married to a Vet and has 3 boys aged 13, 11 and 10.
I am married with 2 kids aged 14 and 12.

Hi Everyone,
I'm Robert Mitchell, was at St Edwards from '81. I've been away from Romford for 9 years now. I'm living in Belgium now. Working in a small design firm specialised in high quality interior refitting. I'm also heavily involved with use and development of 3d graphics software. I've been married to my
lovely wife for 8 years and we have 2 Sons. I'm glad I tripped over this site on my daily trawl of the net, maybe I'll bump into ex-pupils from the 80's. I can be found at
robert@trebledee.com  .If you're interested, some of my work can be found at www.trebledee.com.
Many regards to all.
Robert.

Calling all those Old Edwardians who attended St Edwards C of E, Romford during the years 66 to 73.
It will soon be 30 years since we departed the school, and 20 years since our last reunion. There are still small networks of friends from those times, and we are trying to hook people up with the target of having a full reunion in 2003. If you were, or know the contact details of someone in those Old Ed years,
please send them to me.

I can't believe how many of the old teachers are still there!
I'm now a journalist and live on the other side of London with my boyfriend of 6 years. I'd also love to hear from anyone who was in the Class of 1988 (or 1990 if you stayed on to the 6th form) and especially if you were in the school plays like Matchgirls and Bugsy Malone.
A big hello to Mrs Cassidy if she reads this board.

Hi
I found this on the internet whilst working very hard, looking for something else......Is there anyone else who is looking at this who was in the same year as, or remembers, Tim Love, Mark Waller, Tim Watson, Daniel Brockhurst or me, Aaron Brockhurst.  Probably leaving around '87 to '90.  If you do drop me a line and let me know how you are doing....
Thanks

Hi,
I left St Edwards in 1993 at 16 with my Twin Brother Stephen at 16.  We moved to Bristol
with only a weeks notice and because we intended to start 6th Form at St. Eds, never got a chance to say our goodbye's!! It would be nice to catch up with people who knew us.  Anyone who knew me or my brother should mail me at ben.anderson@orange.net!  I hope to hear from somebody soon!
Regards,
Ben Anderson

OK, so if there's anyone other than Alex reading this, I'd say: Post a message - there's been a lot of water under my bridge since school, and I guess it's true for you, so tell us what you're up to. If for no other
reason than because it'll make Al's day. My life story so far: I left the sixth form expecting to go to university. Instead, I'm a pilot with the Royal Navy. I did start at uni, but soon was 'taken to one side', sounded out, and within a fortnight, I was training in Portsmouth. It's not the greatest job, but there's the odd high point, and all the nice girls love a sailor.  your turn
